Two years ago, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) launched an Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), a flagship programme under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As per the requirements of the ITEP, which requires a dual degree study of B.A, B.Com or B.Sc along with B.Ed, the teacher training institutes are expected to introduce B.Com and B.Sc courses, additional infrastructure, library facilities, and faculty to support two additional Bachelor’s degrees. The NCTE has given till 2030 for gradual transition, and 2026-27 to institutes to start introducing ITEP degree.

The ITEP intends to provide hands-on experience through classroom activities, field placements and internships. However since its launch, there have been some inherent systemic issues related to management, administration and implementation. To address these, the NCTE reviewed the draft regulations that were earlier passed by its council in March 2025.

An earlier analysis by The Hindu says, ‘such a revamp must be substantiated with extensive research findings on different perspectives of the one-year and two-year B.Ed. programmes, and the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme being offered by NCERT’s Regional Institutes of Education for many years’.
