Raghu Rai’s place in the history of photography is already secure. From his years shaping visual journalism at India Today , to becoming one of the earliest Indian photographers to join Magnum Photos, his images have come to define how a nation has seen itself for over half a century.
But secure reputations can flatten a life. Raghu was not simply a great photographer — he was also a force of Nature. He could be generous to the point of transforming lives, and demanding to the point of being impossible. And he mentored with an intensity that made it hard to tell where encouragement ended and insistence began.
