Murders in Avadi Police Commissionerate have reduced this year: CoP

The Avadi City Police on Monday said the number of murder cases in its jurisdiction has reduced in the current year compared to previous years.

Avadi City Police Commissioner K. Shankar said several initiatives and proactive works were taken up in Avadi Police Commissionerate this year to improve policing, which resulted in good maintenance of law and order, prevention of crime and prompt disposal of complaints.

“Stern action was taken against rowdyism, as a result of which murders have reduced in Avadi Police Commissionerate from 59 in 2023 to 48 in 2024 and 38 in 2025. During this year, 190 persons have been detained under the Goondas Act. Similarly, there has been a considerable reduction in cases of attempt to murder, SC/ST Act, property offences like house-breaking, chain snatching and mobile snatching,” said Mr. Shankar.

In 2025, 1,800 kilos of ganja were seized, and 736 persons were arrested. Similarly, 18,900 kilos of banned tobacco products were seized, which is among the highest in the State. A few kingpins involved in gutkha sales were also arrested and detained under the Goondas Act, he said.

To enable the public to easily approach the police and present their petitions, the Commissioner of Police has been meeting the petitioners everyday from 12.30 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. at his office.

Further, Mass Public Grievance Meeting is being held every Wednesday and also feedback is being taken from the petitioners regarding the disposal of their petitions.

“Special focus has been given to the disposal of petitions in Mudhalvarin Mugavari portal. Avadi has the best performance among all the Police Commissionerates with 99% “A” rating in Mudhalvarin Mugavari petition disposal,” said Mr. Shankar.

He said that 290 fatal accidents were reported in 2025 compared to 424 in 2024 and 420 in 2023. Hence, there has been a reduction of 32% in fatal accidents compared to 2024 and 2023.

This has been achieved by mapping the accident hotspots and improving the enforcement in these areas, Mr. Shankar said.
